Peck-tastic facts you didn’t know about woodpeckers

Woodpeckers are more than just birds that hammer trees—they’re full of surprises! For starters, their skulls are built to absorb huge impacts, so they don’t get headaches from all that pecking. They even have a third eyelid to protect their eyes from flying wood chips. One of the coolest things? Their tongues are super long—sometimes three times the length of their beak—and they wrap around the skull when not in use! Woodpeckers don’t just peck to find food; they also drum to communicate and mark territory. Their feet are zygodactyl, meaning two toes face forward and two back, giving them an awesome grip on tree trunks. They can drum up to 20 times per second, making that classic forest tapping sound. Surprisingly, their brains are small on purpose—it reduces damage during pecking. Some species even prefer to nest in cacti, not trees! Plus, they’re nature’s pest control, gobbling up insects hiding in wood. Woodpeckers are loud, clever, and seriously underrated. Now that’s enough to blow your feathers off!

MY TRIP TO SOUTHEND, ADVENTURE ISLAND

Our school trip to Adventure Island in Southend-on-Sea was absolutely amazing! From the moment we arrived, the energy was so exciting, and everyone was buzzing. The rides were thrilling – especially the Rage rollercoaster, which had us all screaming and laughing. The weather was perfect, and we got to explore the park with our friends, which made it even better. It felt like the best day ever, full of fun, freedom, and loads of smiles.

We also got to eat ice cream by the sea and take silly photos near the beach. The staff were super friendly, and everything felt really safe and well organised. I even faced my fear of heights on one of the tall rides – and I’m proud of that! It was a trip I’ll never forget, with memories that will stick for ages. I wish we could go again next week!
